Black & White
I had barely passed my teens when I discovered the first white strand in my hair. I gave it an unguarded, fleeting glance and combed my hair with indifference. It wasn’t until six months later that I discovered another strand that had gone into my right ear. I glanced at it furtively and dismissed it as an aberration. Six months later, however, its number had increased to five, and in the following six months the number surpassed the two-digit mark.
So, I thought it was time to ask my sister for advice. “Attack the problem at its root,” she said, “and it won’t lift its head. The advice was well received. But it was easier said than done because it was one thing to locate the white sheep, and quite another to catch it between your forefinger and thumb and then pull it out. The chaotic operation began by isolating the enemy, capturing a small pile, and then gradually removing the black sheep around it so that in the end only one white enemy remained. But every time I get my hands on it, the damn thing gets away from me. It was only after three failed attempts that I managed to resolve the white threat. The result (quite collectible) was: nine black beauties for a horrible white man. Just when I was desperate, my sister rescued me again, on the condition that I buy her a ticket for the morning screening of a film the next day. She uprooted the remaining nine without any collateral damage. I was surprised by her newfound ability, and then I saw her nimble fingers pull five chips out of my purse.
Five years later, my hair became salty and spicy. I tried every recipe, beer, lotion, potion, and nostrum and worked on a varied diet, exercise, and yoga programs, but the spread did not stop. I remember my sister once casually said, “In a few years you will ask me to pull out your black hair. It seems she foresaw a time when I would have very little black hair left.
One day, while I was busy in my office, a girl came up to me and talked to the guy, who apparently looked at my prematurely gray hair. When I raised my head and looked up, she stood there, blushing. I was surprised, too.
The only drawback to premature graying, however, is that the onset of the Middle Ages becomes less threatening. But my advice to those of this generation facing premature graying is: apply the vegetable dye henna, which makes your hair a carrot or ginger color, and henna is a good natural hair conditioner – without any allergic reaction, of course. Or simply start using a good quality hair dye after testing for allergic reactions before each application, and maintain your youthful look and confidence.
