Types of Henna

Mehandi has been part of Indian culture and tradition for almost 50 centuries. Legend has it that the Moghuls introduced the Mehandi to India, but many believe that they came from India itself. Mehandi, also called henna, is present in many cultures. It is made from the leaves of the cypress flower, also called henna. The name is derived from the Latin name in the Arabic Lawsonia inermis, which is pronounced “hinna”.

The henna leaves are crushed and processed into a paste that is applied to the skin with a cone, brush, or even a bottle with a metal tip, which is also used for painting on silk. The darkness of the henna is directly proportional to the duration of drying. The longer it remains on the skin, the darker it becomes. After the residue is removed, the henna initially looks orange, but after 24-48 hours of oxidation, the color changes to a darker brown.

The Mehani ceremony is an important ritual at most weddings. The Mehandi is intended to enhance the bride’s beauty, and its fragrance gives her a sensual touch that will attract her lover. Mehandi is also associated with the belief that the dark color is a symbol of the husband’s love: the darker the color of the Mehandi, the more your husband loves you. The Mehandi ceremony is a fun time for women where the bride receives intricate painted patterns on her hands, arms, feet, and legs to emphasize the beauty of her wedding dress. The Mehandi is an essential element of Solah Shingar; it can be used in a variety of designs.

The Indian Design

The traditional Indian design of the Mehandi is like a story that goes from the arm to the fingertips. They range from simple to complex constructions. They range from a point in the middle of the palm to a figure on the back of the hand to the figures of a bride and groom.

The Arabic design

The Arabic design is bold and spacious because it does not fill the whole hand. It differs from other designs in that it only has contours. It has strong floral patterns with tendrils and leaves. This style uses only a small amount of Mehandi and dries quickly.

The African design

The African style of the Mehandi truly represents their rustic wildlife culture with bold and intricate patterns of geometric shapes. Sometimes it also contains sacred animals and symbols that are important to different tribes. The distance between the lines is not as large as in the Arabic style, and it looks a lot like a net in the hands and feet.

As trends have changed, traditional Mehandi has also adapted to new styles like Zardosi Mehandi. In today’s world, women don’t like to spend hours applying Mehandi, waiting for it to dry and disposing of the waste. For them, Zardosi Mehandi is the best style. It is decorated with gold or silver zari, colored bindis, pearls, etc. It is like a Mehandi that is glued together and ready to use.
